In honor of my niece being born today, this blog post will be devoted to birth!  But not just any birth — the birth of characters.

Who comes first?  The character or the story?

For me it’s an even mix of both.  For the first novel I ever wrote, the storyline came first.  The characters and protagonists came almost right along with it.  I think that the protagonist and the story come hand in hand.  I mean, you almost need the protagonist for the progression of the plot, or you need the plot for the progression of the protagonist.

But what about those times where you say: You know what would make an awesome story?  If this happened to someone.  Or other times where you think:  This would make an AMAZING character.  Now I just need to put him somewhere.

Which one normally happens first to you?  Or do they both come together?
